Ethan's African Working Adventure

I have been given a fantastic opportunity to travel to Ghana with Essex Scouts! Only 22 scouts across the whole of Essex were awarded this opportunity and I was one of them!

I will be working with The African Adventures Foundation on a school project in the Volta region of Ghana as a volunteer. I will be supporting various building projects while I am there to help maintain the upkeep of one of the many schools surrounded by poverty. Whether it be painting and decorating, building new walls, or levelling floors, I aim to give it my all and really try to make a difference on this lifetime opportunity.

I have been a member of the 26th Colchester Sea Scouts since I was 8 years old and have progressed from cubs to scouts and am now an Explorer and a Young Leader with the scout group. I am currently working towards my platinum scouting award and intend to use my scouting experience to make a difference to those less fortunate than me.

African Adventures work with 11 schools based in Ghana’s rural Volta region, where poverty is widespread. The main industries are agriculture and fishing, and children often work alongside their families to bring in an income, instead of attending school. In working with these schools, African Adventures try to encourage more children to start school earlier and stay in education longer. From building classrooms and new toilet blocks to delivering menstrual health and food security programmes, the work delivered by African Adventures each year is broad, all of which will impact overall at reducing poverty and improving livelihoods in the area.

How can you help?
I now am faced with the challenge of raising the funds needed to get to Ghana. As well as my travel costs, I hope to be able to take vital supplies out for the children of my assigned school which will include school equipment, personal sanitary items, clothes and other items to make their lives a bit easier. Your donation will go toward funding me to volunteer in Ghana for two weeks as well as help me in my mission to help the African Adventure team with the next phase of the schools project. I have a few fundraising event planned but would really love your personal support with this.

I know times are tough for many families, but every single penny of your donation really will help me reach my goal. Thank you for reading and supporting, it means so much.
